“We don’t use the body to get into the pose,
We use the pose to get into the body”

Bernie Clark

In this weekend we will explore different aspects of our anatomy to get a deeper understanding of our own uniqueness, which would help us adapt the (yoga) practice to meet our individual needs and cultivate a deeper connection

Workshop Day 1: Functional Approach to Yoga

Time: Saturday, July 20th, 2024, 11:00 - 15:00
Location: Moagem Celeiro, R. João Dias Mendes 14, 8670-086 Aljezur

What stops us from doing certain poses? Why are other poses really easy for us? Why are we doing the poses we are doing to begin with?

In this workshop we will explore how Functional Yoga principles can be applied to our (or our students’) practice. By understanding our unique skeletal structures, we can better adapt our practice to meet our individual needs and cultivate a deeper connection with our bodies.

The workshop consists of a dive into the skeletal variations and what they mean for our practice, a hands-on exploration of these variations in different poses and a Functional Yang/Yin class in which all this (new) knowledge can be put into practice.

Workshop Day 2: Yin Yoga and the Fascinating World of Fascia

Time: Sunday, July 21st, 2024, 11:00 - 15:00
Location: Moagem Celeiro, R. João Dias Mendes 14, 8670-086 Aljezur

Yin Yoga is a slow and introspective practice, in which we stay in poses for several minutes. Simply slowing down and becoming quiet is already hugely beneficial (though often quite challenging), but there’s more to the Yin practice than just that.

In this workshop we will look into the basic concepts of Yin and Yang and how we can apply them to the tissues of our body and our practice. We will (quite literally) go into the fascia, why is it important to stimulate it and keep it juicy and what is its relationship to the meridians.

The workshop will consist of a brief exploration of the Taoistic concepts of Yin and Yang, fascia theory and a nourishing Yin practice.

What is Functional Yoga?

Functional Yoga is not another yoga style, but an approach applicable to any yoga style or exercise. Based on the scientific understanding of our bodily and mental uniqueness, it acknowledges our individual capabilities and limitations.

This approach can liberate us from unrealistic expectations, allowing everyone to enjoy a safe, nourishing, and fun practice regardless of age, background, or flexibility.

Functional Yoga was developed and organised into a system by Paul and Suzee Grilley; it includes deep understanding of how the body works through functional anatomy studies and also the ever present insight that we are much more than our bodies given by yoga philosophy.

The Teacher

Ehud Neuhaus has been studying and assisting Anat Geiger and Marcel van de Vis Heil in their Functional Yoga Teacher Training since 2013 and in the last years studying with Paul and Suzee Grilley, pioneers in the functional approach to yoga and founders of Yin Yoga.

Together with Anat and Marcel he founded the online platform The Fat Yogis, home of functional yoga. These days Ehud is teaching weekly (online) classes and (teacher) training programs.

Ehud’s teaching style is playful and introspective, mostly combining Yang (active) and Yin aspects in his classes. Asana and philosophy are both practised on the mat.
